Foundation Programme

The Foundation Programe, or FP, is a structured study programme suitable for those with some experience of GP classes and faith in the Buddhist path. The programme helps the student to deepen their knowledge and experience of Buddha’s teachings. FP classes include:

  • Chanted Prayers.
  • Meditations.
  • Systematic Study.
  • Paired and Group Discussion.

The subject of study is one of six books written by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. They are:

Joyful Path of Good Fortune - which outlines and explains the entire path to enlightenment

Understanding the Mind - an exploration of the nature and function of the mind

Heart of Wisdom - an explanation of the true nature of reality.

Eight Steps to Happiness - a profound explanation of the practice of cherishing others

Universal Compassion - techniques for transforming daily experiences into the spiritual path

Meaningful to Behold - an explanation of the practices of a Bodhisattva, a friend of the world

The teacher reads from the book and gives a commentary which the students then discuss, contemplate and practice in their daily life. The current book on both weekday and Sunday FP is Eight Steps To Happiness. The next book to be studied on both programmes will be Joyful Path of Good Fortune

There are many advantages to joining FP. As well as improving their experience and understanding of Buddha’s beautiful instructions, the student benefits from regular contact and support with the Sangha or spiritual friends.

Anyone with basic understanding of Buddha’s teachings and a sincere wish to learn and deepen their practice can join FP. There are some commitments involved in the programme, please contact Education Programme Coordinator, epc@madhyamaka.org, for further information.
